About the Foundation
About the Donna M. Crandall Foundation
Inspired by Donna M. Crandall’s enduring spirit and determination, her friends and family created this foundation in January 2000 as a way to honor her memory. What originally began as a family’s humble vision to pay tribute to Donna by helping cystic fibrosis (CF) patients has grown beyond our wildest imaginations. Over the past nine years, we have had the privilege of touching hundreds of lives, and, in many cases, have made a profoundly significant impact when patients had nowhere else to turn. Just as it was in the beginning, the Foundation remains a family-run organization, with no overhead or administrative costs, relying entirely on the generosity of donors. Thanks to your support, we have never had to deny those in crisis. Together, we are making a difference.
Donna M. Crandall Foundation Programs
Gift Bag Program
The Donna M. Crandall Foundation works to help CF patients and their families in a variety of ways. Our earliest venture—one still dear to our hearts—is the Gift Bag Program. Every CF patient admitted to Albany Medical Center receives a special canvas gift bag filled with items specially selected to help make his hospital stay a little more bearable. Typical gift bags include Beats headphones, Fitbits, Kindle Fires, iPods, Gift cards to Panera, Starbucks and Dunkin Doughnuts and all eateries near Albany Med. To date, we have delivered over 1550 bags to Albany Medical Center.
Hospital Room Expenses
The Foundation also pays for miscellaneous hospital room expenses for patients, who typically spend weeks at a time in the hospital several times a year. Costs covered include telephone access, TV service, and parking passes for visitors. A debit card arrangement with the hospital’s food service department also allows patients and families to charge back meals and snacks to the Foundation. In addition, arrangements have been made for the Foundation to pay for rooms and meals for long-distance patients and their family members who are staying at the hotel located directly across from the Medical Center. Throughout the year, the Foundation also provides patients who go to the CF clinic for check-ups with seasonal-themed surprises.
While the above programs are an essential part of the Foundation’s ongoing effort to help make life with CF a little more tolerable, it is also our privilege to be a resource to those with specific, significant financial challenges. Whether by making up a late mortgage payment, paying an electric bill, providing gas for the car or a grocery store gift card, the Foundation steps in whenever it can to help patients get back on their feet.
